This demon was caught up in the ruckus during the fall of Satan. Because he made no choice – neither followed God nor followed Satan – he was cast out among the fallen angels. The fallen angles, now called demons, now live in second heaven between Heaven and Earth. The watch the goings-on of the humans below and do their best to interrupt God’s plans for His people, the Israelites.
This second book in the Reluctant Demon Diaries series picks up when the deliverer of the Israelite people arrives. The Israelites have lived in slavery for 400 hundreds until, as the demon author watches from above, Moses is born and escapes Satan’s instigated murder of Hebrew babies.
As the demon keeps watch, Moses goes through the events depicted in Scripture. He watches Moses meet God at the burning bush; watches as the the plagues occur and as Moses leads the Hebrew people through the sea. The demon continues to watch through Moses death and through Joshua’s time of leadership.
Overall, this is a very intriguing series. It’s very interesting to read things from the fictional perspective of a demon, watching from above as events occur on Earth and trying to guess what God’s plan might be.
There were a few things that did bother me about this book. There were a few times when Satan seems a little too naive, too bone-headed to actually have a plan of his own. He relies on this unnamed demon a little more than is believable to know what God is planning and is just a little too ‘silly’ for my taste. In my opinion Satan is cunning and devious – this novel depicts him more as a bumbling fool.
As I stated above, overall the book is enjoyable. It brings an eternal perspective to the reader and causes one to think about the spiritual dimension, something many of us fail to even consider in our day-to-day lives.
