Plot: When a former employee turns up dead at Daniel Matthews’ restaurant, followed immediately by a fire at another of his restaurants, it’s clear he’s being targeted. While the former Marine thinks he can take care of himself, his niece Riley wants to hire the Elite Guardians. Already having lost her parents, Riley doesn’t want anything bad to happen to her uncle as well. Katie Singleton knows Riley from the self-defense classes she teaches, and along with the rest of her team, will do everything they can to keep Daniel alive.
Characters: With his military background, Daniel’s not the usual client for the Elite Guardians. He’s more than capable of watching his own back, but when Riley’s concerned for his safety, Daniel accepts Katie’s help. Katie faced some tough situations and has a dark past, but if anyone can understand what she’s been through, it’s Daniel. I loved also seeing some scenes in the book from Riley’s perspective. While she’s only 17, she’s quite smart, mature, and nearly took over the story. You’ve got to admire a teenage pilot.
Recommendation: I’d highly recommend this book to those who enjoy strong female protagonists and inspirational romantic suspense. It’s the second book of the series, but can stand alone. I think you’ll like it so well that you’ll want to read the rest of the series, though. I myself can’t wait for the next book to come out! Lynette Eason’s already put Quinn and Maddy through a lot and I’m wondering how much more they’ll have to endure.
