Plot: Former Army Ranger Finn McGregor is trying to recover from a disastrous mission and needs some R &R. Nothing better than a cabin in the woods, until he hears a woman screaming and ends up barging in on his temporary neighbor, Dana Lewis, who clearly is escaping some horrors of her own. When it becomes clear that someone is trying to drive Dana away, Finn appoints himself her protector. The fact that he’s attracted to her makes the job easier. Meanwhile, Police Chief Roger Burnett is trying to figure out how to pay his wife’s nursing home bills as she’s on the decline from Alzheimer’s. When an opportunity arises, he must decide whether he’s willing to cross the ethical lines. Throw in a hidden drug lab in the woods, and danger is all around Dana and Finn.
Characters: Finn and Dana were just perfect together and had great chemistry. They both have some issues they’re working through, traumas from the past, and I liked how they were unraveled through the book. Chief Burnett is caught in a tough spot. He earns sympathy, and even though he makes some bad decisions, I couldn’t help but like him for his devotion to his wife.
Recommendation: I’d highly recommend reading this book. It’s going on my ‘must read’ shelf. While it’s the third book in the series, it can stand alone. I can’t wait to see what great suspense series Ms. Hannon will come up with next.
