Bailey Walker has lost everything-her job, her family, and her home. Now, she has no place to go, except to her deceased grandmother’s creepy old house. But her arrival is anything but welcoming. A dead cat is wrapped up like a present inside the house. A man walks into the house unannounced. The bedroom has a leak, right over the bed. And when Bailey does finally manage to get to sleep, she discovers that a strange woman is trying to shake her awake, believing she’s a corpse.
Bailey begins to feel like she’s trapped inside the pages of a gothic novel, but with a comedic twist. There is a really appealing bachelor, Max, but Max tells Bailey that he was hired by her grandmother to watch out for her until she marries. Plus, Bailey learns that in order to be able to stay at her grandmother’s house, she needs to unravel a string of mysteries and secrets which seem to want to stay buried.
Another Stab at Life has a decidedly gothic feel to the book, though some of the characters do wonders to lighten the mood. Warning: don’t eat while reading this book. Some of the phrases and descriptions used are decidedly sickening.
Bailey is realistic acting, though I’m not sure she makes the wisest decisions in the world-but it did make for interesting reading. Not being a fan of gothic, Another Stab at Life wasn’t my favorite of the cozy mysteries that I’ve read, but it certainly was unique from the others, giving it its own flavor-and the ending is not to be missed. Fans of cozy mysteries won’t want to miss Another Stab at Life.
