Review – Lethal Remedy
Reviewed by Gail Welborn
The mystery is an entertaining quick read that combines intriguing medical and mystery elements that keep the late night lights on.
When Chelsea Ferguson had her wisdom teeth extracted her mother expected her to return to school in a few days. Instead Chelsea lay unable to move in University Hospital’s ICU, surrounded by beeping monitors, an IV in her arm and her skin hot to the touch. Her mother didn’t know what was wrong, but knew she was getting worse, in spite of doctors reassurances.
When Dr. Sara Miles stopped in to see if Chelsea were responding to the new round of antibiotics she ordered, her mother again asked, “Do you know what’s wrong…?”
Dr. Sara explained they were still running tests and only knew Chelsea had “blood poisoning” from an unknown bacterium, but thought to herself, “I can’t believe the dentist didn’t put her on a prophylactic antibiotic before the procedure.”
Thus begins book four of Mabry’s The Prescription for Trouble series, a medical suspense that includes a life and death choice. To use an unapproved experimental drug to stop a lethal bacterium in defiance of medical protocol or follow the rules and let a patient die.
Add a killer, hidden test data, an ex-husband, grief, a new love interest and drug companies in a race for power, glory and riches and readers have a page-turning read.
The medical issues could be pulled from newspapers front pages, from antibiotic resistant MRSA to the new and dreaded “Staph luciferus,” what the doctors call “the killer.” The mystery is an entertaining quick read that combines intriguing medical and mystery elements that keep the late night lights on.

What happens when the race to stop a lethal bacteria becomes a race to stop a killer?
Dr. Sara Miles’s teenage patient is on the brink of death from the overwhelming, highly resistant infection Staph luciferus, known to doctors as “the killer.” Only an experimental antibiotic, developed and administered by Sara’s ex-husband can save the girl’s life.
But potentially lethal effects from the drug send Sara and her colleague, Dr. Rip Pearson, on a hunt for hidden critical data that will let them reverse the effects before it’s too late. What is the missing puzzle piece? And who is hiding it?
