Frantic opens with Marny Toogood’s life about as normal as it can be. As a gas station attendant at the Gas `n Go, he really doesn’t have much excitement in his life. Until a car pulls up to the pumps for gas, and as Marny fills the tank, he notices a woman in the backseat with terrified eyes. When she holds up a note that reads, HE’S GOING TO KILL ME, Marny can’t let them drive off without following.
As he does, he enters into an evil world where a man named Gary holds Esther and her bother William captive. Marny frees them and though he believes he is cursed in his relationships and fears they will die because of him, he decides to try to save and protect them from Gary. What follows is a legendary struggle between good and evil.
Frantic is a true Mike Dellosso book. It begins with incredible descriptions and prose—something as a fellow writer I can really appreciate—drawing you into the story. Then, in the case of Frantic, he keeps up a frantic pace that won’t let you stop reading until you finish the book.
Dellosso’s characters in Frantic and in all of his books are real, flawed and struggling with faith. They must overcome the impossible to come out the other side whole. Though we don’t face the supernatural worlds of Dellosso’s characters, he writes them in such a way that the reader can identify with them and come away asking questions about our own lives and our faith.
So if you’ve never read a Mike Dellosso book, I encourage you to pick one up and Frantic is an incredible one to start with.
